The Finnish brand Voutilainendidn’t find inspiration for its latest creation in the 1,000 lakes of the motherland. Their latest creation, the Vingt-8 ISO is inspired by a Nobel Prize-winning study on human behaviour.
Voutilainen latest creation is not an intuitive watch but an intellectual one. Normally reading time at a glance is preferred. When you’re diving into the abyss you instantly want to know what time it is or how much longer you can stay submerged with enough oxygen; no time to spare for an intellectual moment of contemplation to figure out the time which is displayed on your wristwatch. The Voutilainen Vingt-8 ISO is definitely not a diver’s watch. This watch introduces a completely innovative display of the time based on System 1 and System 2 human behaviour, as studied by Nobel Prize-winner Daniel Kahneman. The Vingt-8 ISO breaks with System 1 behaviour, whereby time is read at a glance using a deeply entrenched “code”, and instead elicits System 2 behaviour in which telling the time acquires a deeper, more intellectual dimension.
Intellectual time
Why would an intellectual approach be better? Well, System 2 heightens the awareness of time according to scientific studies. On the Vingt-8 ISO time is translated by hour and minute hands which are superimposed on each full hour, and opposed at each half-hour. The angle between the two hands is always the same, whatever the time. The secret lies with the minutes disc that turns with the hour hand so that the minutes hand can mark the elapsed minutes.
Two escape wheels
The 39mm pink gold Vingt-8 ISO is equipped with the hand-wound, Vingt-8 calibre, designed, made and finished in the Voutilainen workshops. The escapement with two escape wheels and direct impulse is a thing of beauty and so are the Breguet/Grossmann balance-spring, plate and bridges in German silver and pink gold wheels. Intellectual accuracy is guaranteed for 65 hours.
