The new Boy.Friend Skeleton Calibre 3 is an important watch for Chanel. It not only introduces the third in-house movement of the brand, and further shows that it is a force to reckon with, but it is also a concept that few watch brands have tried: truly unisex watches.
Women often have no problem wearing men’s watches, but the other way around rarely happens. With the Boy.Friend Skeleton Calibre 3 Chanel is trying to establish a middle ground that can go both ways. Of course, the movement is exquisite, with an unusual circular design for the bridges and main plate. The watch is handwound and has a subdial at six o’clock which displays the seconds. The mainspring barrel is skeletonised also, so you can see how far it is wound.
The case itself is also exceptional. Its shape is inspired on Place Vendôme in Paris, which is also the location of the Ritz Hotel where Gabrielle Chanel lived most of her life. This gives the watch a classic look that will indeed look well on the wrist of both men and women and this proposition is further strengthened by a black alligator strap and a buckle styled in a similar fashion as the case.
