The expedition conducted by AWW (Arqueonautas) and the Indonesia’s Bureau for the Protection of Cultural Heritage took place a few days ago in the crystal clear waters of Kabaena, Southeast Sulawesi (Indonesia). The goal was to certify that the Tijger flagship, which sank in 1650, lies there and, to find some other possible shipwrecks of the other ships belonging to the Ternate fleet.
The results of the expedition have exceeded from far all expectations. Relevant cultural material was discovered, additional tumuli were observed and a total of seven shipwrecks were found (4 shipwrecks were initially planned to be found). All remnants are now at a conservation facility of the government in Makassar for further investigation. The next expedition is planned in November 2017 and will focus mostly on a possible trail-excavation of the Tijger wreckage and on the seven new shipwrecks inspection.
